Restoration of the Culebrita Lighthouse
The restoration of the Culebrita Lighthouse was the initial reason for the creation of the Culebra Foundation, Inc. more than 30 years ago. The Culebra Foundation, through its efforts, especially those of Juan J. Romero, managed to transfer it from the United States Department of the Interior to the Municipality of Culebra. In January 2015, the Municipality of Culebra awarded a contract for the restoration and management of the Lighthouse to the Conservation Trust, Unidad Para la Naturaleza. Unfortunately, hurricanes and the pandemic have delayed the restoration process. They have worked with the permits for the restoration of the pier, cleaning of the area and the publication of a book about the Culebrita Lighthouse written by Dr. Aníbal Sepúlveda. It is in Spanish and English, and can be purchased at the museum store. (INCLUDE PHOTO OF BOTH COVERS)
We maintain our goal of restoring the Lighthouse to its original beauty and having a voice from Culebra in the process as a community project. We are working in partnership with the Conservation Trust and we hope to see it in all its splendor converted into a sustainable community project.
Culebrita Lighthouse Documentary
The Culebra Foundation is proud to have sponsored the project to document the history of the Culebrita Lighthouse. The video covers its architectural beauty and the history of the lighthouse and those who lived there. It presents spectacular visuals and valuable information about this historic landmark. We thank all those who helped make this project a reality, especially Architect Janet Null and her husband Gene Lindman. The documentary has English subtitles.
