Community Resilience

Climate change makes Culebra and its community vulnerable. That’s why the Culebra Foundation includes resiliency components into many of the community projects and activities that we do.  We have made it a goal to make Culebra the First Solar Island in America.  By modeling the ways that resiliency can be implemented and by educating the community at every opportunity, we can move that agenda forward.

The Culebra Foundation restored and currently maintains two buildings; the Culebra Museum(1905) and Offices(1908).  After the serious impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017, both buildings were converted into Community Resilience Centers with the help of a few support organizations. They have solar energy, drinking water tanks, satellite communications, and other resources that are available to the community during natural disasters.
