Projects / Musica Pa' Culebra
The Music Pa' Culebra program began with Summer Camp in 2016 and has grown into a year-round music and arts program. One of our goals is for the children of Culebra to have music in their lives and for music to play an important role in the community. Learning music requires developing very useful life skills, especially when living in a place as far off the beaten track as Culebra. Our program has children from the two schools on the island: La Escuela Ecológica (public) and Abbie's School (homeschool). It is the only place where all the children and families of Culebra come together. Through music, many important life skills are developed: communication skills, teamwork, perseverance, self-confidence, focus, etc. Additionally, kids that participate in musical activities and bands develop personal connections with others that will last a lifetime. In a place like Culebra with a population of 1,700 inhabitants, these interpersonal relationships help Culebra to be a stronger community. The development of our two Steel Drum bands has lifted the community spirit dramatically. Steel drum music is a part of Culebra history and helps anchor its Caribbean identity. Being able to hear the children play this music is an act of cultural resilience. Culebra is currently undergoing a musical resurgence. The old musicians and the new ones are playing in family gatherings, at restaurants and in other activities. The hunger to spread joy through music has been awakened. The Música Pa’ Culebra program has developed other components within it. We now have a recording and production studio, a bomba circle, dance classes, yoga classes, adult music lessons and the Adult Umbrella; a space where young children take dance, art, games and reading classes on Saturdays.
